The Zimbabwe German Society in Harare hosted a curated two-man exhibition of paintings, drawings and graphics by emerging visual artists Richard Mudariki and Mukudzei Muzondo on the 5th of April 2010. 

The exhibition, curated by Richard Mudariki, was officially opened by the Cultural attache at the German Embassy, Petra Schimdt. Included in the exhibition were artworks  art were are not only aesthetically appealing but that also catch the attention of the viewer. The artists explored various and exciting techniques in an expressive manner, ideas media and themes.



The exhibition was a visual representation of each artist’s reflections of Zimbabwe’s past, present and hopes of the future. The artworks mirrored the society that the artists live in, reflecting through visual images, its aspirations, concerns, fears and hopes. An engagement and exploration of a variety of media and techniques in present in the artworks in this show. The two artists believe that creating art provides the greatest freedom of self expression. There are no boundaries or limitations. Artists are free to communicate their visions, dreams and interpretations. In their work, they overcome fear of ridicule and can be daring and foolish.


The exhibition ran for a week in Harare.

Artist Conversation: one on one with Richard Mudariki in London

African contemporary art and artists have been receiving international support over the past few years. One platform that is dedicated to showcasing contemporary art from the continent to new audiences in the western world is the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair. Bringing together 15 exhibitors and over 70 emerging and established artist from Africa, the art fair launched its first edition in London in 2013. In just two years, the fair has moved from being an annual platform to a biannual platform, having launched a New York edition in May. We are living in exciting times. In my opinion, the future of the African continent has never looked brighter than today. We live in an era of relative peace, freedom, ease of communication and travel, better health facilities and education.   Though this generation has its own unique challenges, they are in sharp contrast to the inequalities and oppression experienced during the eras of slavery, colonialism and apartheid. The ‘born free generation’ can only imagine how harsh life would have been during those times.  Many artists from previous generations had their work dismissed as primitive - only to be exhibited as tribal art.
